Description
The colonial top paling is a distinctly Australian fencing staple — the slight pointed peak at the top gives it the traditional picket-fence character seen across residential properties everywhere. At 75mm wide and 16mm thick, it sits neatly alongside standard paling fence construction and is one of the most commonly specified profiles in Queensland and NSW.

Applications
Colonial top palings are used wherever a traditional or semi-formal fence aesthetic is desired. Common applications include front yard boundary fences, garden borders, pool area fencing (non-compliant decorative), side-yard screen fencing, and anywhere the vertical board profile of a standard paling fence is wanted but with a more decorative top treatment than a plain sawn edge.
Colonial Top vs Standard Paling — What’s the Difference?
A standard paling has a straight sawn top edge. A colonial top paling has a shaped peak — either a pointed or slightly chamfered top — that adds visual character without changing the installation method, the structural role of the paling, or the timber specification. They install identically and pair with the same rails and posts. It’s purely an aesthetic choice.
Need to Know
CCA treated timber has a characteristic green tint that naturally fades to a grey-brown over time outdoors. Freshly cut ends should be sealed with an end-grain preservative. These palings are sold individually — price shown is per paling. Works with standard 75×38mm or 100×38mm CCA pine rails.
Wet sawn. Landscape grade timber.
